Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop materials required for in-service teacher training under the project. This may include training manuals, modules, activity books, scripted lesson plan, decodable readers, leveled readers etc

Work with the reading adviser, materials development coordinator, technical adviser and provincial/regional review committees to develop a scope and sequence for Pashto

Use innovation and creativity in the material development process, taking into account recent research and best practices in reading and in classroom instructions

Ensure that all the materials developed are contextually relevant, error free, in-line with the national curriculum and is appropriate for early grade reading

Work with the typists and graphic designer to produce attractive and reader friendly material

Work with the reading adviser, materials development coordinator and other experts to train project staff, government officials and other counterparts under in-service teacher training program

Ensure that all the material is ready for printing in due time before start of each cohort

Monitor trainings, TIG meetings and visit schools to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the material. Also pilot test materials as and when required in schools

Support the material development coordinator in preparing plans and reports


Required Skills:
Required Skills & Qualifications:

Qualification:

· Minimum qualification masters in linguistics/ educational psychology/Pashto (a degree in Education or primary teaching will be preferred)

Experience:

Have at least 05 years of experience in;

Developing teaching and learning material for education programs with a particular focus for early grades in Pashto (experience in reading related material will be preferred)

Training of teachers and education officials

Experience as a primary classroom teacher (K-2) is strongly preferred

Skills:

· Excellent skill in teaching and learning material development particularly for early grades in Pashto
· Understanding of the component skills of reading and how they interact to help children learn to read
· Ability to model best practices in reading instruction (for example: reading aloud to a class, assessing students in reading, facilitating learning activities) for teachers
· Demonstrated skill in interactive and activity based teaching and learning techniques
· Good report writing skills
· Good computer skills in MS office (typing in Pashto will be preferred)
· Good data management skills

· Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, in Pashto, Urdu and English (Knowledge of local languages will be an additional asset)

Travel Requirements:

This project has extensive field travel and the candidate should be willing to travel across province/region and to remote areas (at least 30% time will be spent in the field)

The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project, implemented by the International Rescue Committee and its partners (Creative Associates International, World Learning, and Institute of Rural Management), is a seven-year project (2013-2020) with the objective to support the provincial and regional departments of education throughout Pakistan to improve reading skills of 1.3 million children in grades one and two. The project will achieve this goal through three distinct but interrelated components that will work in synergy to affect the quality of early grade education: Improved classroom learning environment for reading, Improved policies and systems for reading, and Improved community based support for reading in Pakistan.
